UN Reports Intensifying Hunger Crisis in Afghanistan Affecting Millions
The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) has reported a severe escalation in Afghanistan's hunger crisis, with nearly half of the country's minors suffering from malnutrition. According to John Aylieff, the WFP's representative for Afghanistan, the reduction in aid from donor countries has severely limited the organization's ability to provide support, now only able to assist one in nine malnourished children. The crisis has reached unprecedented levels, with 47% of minors undernourished in the first quarter of the year. Afghanistan, home to over 48 million people, sees 14 million of its population facing acute hunger. The situation is exacerbated by the lack of resources, leading to the complete cessation of food distribution in some crisis regions.
