HCA Healthcare CEO Addresses Mission Hospital Challenges, Vows to Rebuild Community Trust in Asheville
HCA Healthcare CEO Sam Hazen recently visited Asheville, North Carolina, to address ongoing challenges at Mission Hospital, including issues with staffing, patient flow, capacity, and community trust. Hazen acknowledged shortcomings at Mission Hospital, stating that the facility has not always met the performance expectations of patients, the community, and HCA itself. His visit followed the resolution of a CMS review process, which he indicated allowed HCA to focus on operational improvements. Hazen outlined HCA's plans to tackle these issues, emphasizing the company's commitment to providing quality care, improving the work environment for employees and physicians, and regaining the community's confidence. He noted that HCA has invested nearly $750 million in Western North Carolina since acquiring Mission Hospital and highlighted efforts to expand nursing education through partnerships with local colleges and the Galen College of Nursing.
