Pacific Islanders Advocate for Inclusion in Precision Medicine Research
Indigenous health experts from the Pacific island region are advocating for active participation in precision medicine research. This approach to healthcare considers individual genetic, environmental, and lifestyle differences to tailor treatment and prevention strategies. The Polynesian Precision Medicine Symposium in Samoa, attended by over 110 health leaders, researchers, and community advocates from the Pacific, New Zealand, Australia, and the United States, aims to address the exclusion of Indigenous populations from genetics and genomics research. The symposium will explore equitable and culturally grounded approaches to precision medicine, emphasizing the importance of Indigenous data sovereignty, ethical governance, and community engagement.
