Gen Z Students Use TikTok for Scholarship Searches Amid Risks of Misinformation
A recent report by the marketing agency Fractl, commissioned by Sallie Mae, reveals that Gen Z students are increasingly using TikTok to search for college scholarships. The report, based on a survey of 274 undergraduates, found that 68% of Gen Z students occasionally use TikTok for this purpose, with 20% doing so weekly. While 60% of these students reported discovering new scholarships through TikTok, the platform also exposes them to scams and misinformation. About a third of the students encountered misleading content, such as non-existent scholarships and incorrect eligibility requirements. Despite these risks, students tend to trust personal success stories and advice from peers on TikTok more than from certified financial advisers or official scholarship organizations.
