Turkiye and Iraq Sign One-Year Oil Pipeline Deal Amid Global Market Shifts
Turkiye and Iraq have signed a one-year agreement to maintain the flow of crude oil through the Kirkuk-Ceyhan Oil Pipeline. This deal, involving Turkish state firm BOTAS and Iraq's state oil companies SOMO and NOC, was finalized shortly after a high-level meeting in Ankara between Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi. The pipeline, which has a maximum capacity of 1.5 million barrels per day, is currently underutilized, carrying only about 170,000 barrels per day. The agreement aims to ensure a daily flow of 750,000 barrels. This development comes in the wake of Iran's effective closure of the Strait of Hormuz, which has forced Iraq to seek alternative export routes. The pipeline is expected to extend Iraq's only functioning oil export route to the Mediterranean.
