Spanish Holiday Hotspots Protest Airport Expansion Plans Amid Overtourism Concerns
Thousands of protesters have marched through popular Spanish holiday destinations, including Barcelona, Palma in Mallorca, and Ibiza Town, to demonstrate against proposed airport expansion plans. The demonstrations, which saw an estimated 5,500 participants in Barcelona alone according to local police (organizers claimed closer to 30,000), were largely peaceful. Protesters voiced concerns that expanding airports would exacerbate existing issues of 'overtourism' in these areas. The Spanish airport authority, Aena, denies that its multi-million-pound expansion plans are intended to increase tourist numbers, stating that the improvements are necessary to meet changing demands and enhance facilities. However, local groups and academics argue that these expansions will inevitably lead to more visitors, putting further strain on local resources and quality of life. Demands from protesters include a reduction in flights, limitations on private aviation, and greater local control over airport decisions.
