Gabrielle Amster Appointed to Lead Los Angeles Animal Services Amid Criticism
Gabrielle Amster has been appointed as the new general manager of Los Angeles Animal Services by Mayor Karen Bass. Amster, who previously directed the Wallis Annenberg PetSpace, is recognized for her efforts in increasing adoptions and enhancing spay and neuter services. Her appointment comes at a time when the city's animal shelters face criticism for overcrowding and inhumane treatment. If confirmed by the City Council, Amster will oversee one of the largest shelter systems in the U.S., managing six shelters and handling approximately 60,000 animals annually. The previous director, Staycee Dains, resigned in 2024 amid similar criticisms. Amster's leadership is expected to address rising euthanasia rates and improve conditions within the shelters.
