High Flood Risk Identified for 17 Million on Atlantic and Gulf Coasts
A recent study conducted by researchers at the University of Alabama has identified that over 17 million people residing along the U.S. Atlantic and Gulf coasts are at significant risk of flooding. The study, published in Science Advances, utilized 16 factors including geographic hazards, population density, and infrastructure vulnerability to assess flood risks from Texas to Maine. The research highlights New York and New Orleans as particularly vulnerable, with New York City having 4.75 million people at high risk levels and New Orleans involving 99% of its population. The study underscores the increasing threat posed by climate change, which exacerbates flood risks in these regions.
