Gravestones Discovered in Menomonee River Raise Historical Questions
In Wauwatosa, Wisconsin, gravestones have been discovered protruding from the Menomonee River near Hart Park. These stones, some dating back to the 1930s, were brought to public attention after a viewer submitted photographs to a local news outlet. The Wauwatosa Historical Society has been aware of these stones for the past three years. They suggest that the gravestones likely contain errors and were discarded, a practice that was not uncommon in the 20th century. Despite the stones' presence in the river, it is confirmed that the graves associated with these stones have not been displaced, as one of the stones still corresponds to a plot at Holy Cross Cemetery, located nearly three miles away. The exact origins and the duration of the stones' presence in the river remain unknown.
