Discovery of Tiny Mammoth Ivory Bird Figurines at Hohle Fels Cave
Archaeologists have discovered two tiny mammoth ivory bird figurines in the Hohle Fels Cave, located in the Swabian Alps of southwestern Germany. These intricately carved figures, dating back 40,000 years, depict birds with detailed anatomical features. One figurine shows a bird at rest, while the other has outstretched wings, though one wing is broken. These artifacts are among the smallest known Ice Age artworks, with the bird with outstretched wings measuring just two centimeters long. The figurines are believed to have been carried as talismans by Ice Age hunters.
