University of California Admits Record Number of Californians Amid Federal Scrutiny
The University of California (UC) has admitted a record number of California residents for the fall semester, with 102,031 first-year students and 29,372 transfer students from California community colleges. This increase comes as the UC system faces pressure from state authorities to enroll more local students and scrutiny from federal investigations into its admissions practices. The UC system, which includes nine undergraduate campuses, accepted 78% of Californian applicants, though acceptance rates varied significantly across campuses. UC Berkeley and UCLA admitted about 10% of applicants, while UC Merced admitted nearly all who met academic requirements. The admissions cycle is the first since federal investigations began into the use of race in admissions at several UC campuses, with the Justice Department examining potential racial biases.
