EU Directive Mandates Evidence-Based Sustainability Claims for Destinations
The European Union is set to implement a new directive, the Empowering Consumers for the Green Transition Directive (EU) 2024/825, which will take effect on September 27, 2026. This directive requires all sustainability claims made by destinations, tourism businesses, and event organizers to be backed by verifiable evidence. The European Travel Commission, the Global Destination Sustainability Movement, and NECSTouR have launched a report titled 'Proof, Not Promises' to guide these entities in adapting to this significant regulatory change. The directive aims to shift sustainability communication from narrative-led to evidence-based, ensuring that claims are clear, specific, and not misleading. This change is expected to enhance trust and collaboration within the tourism sector, positioning European destinations for long-term resilience.
