Florida Lawmakers Propose Roberto Clemente Statue in U.S. Capitol
Reps. Gus Bilirakis (R-Palm Harbor) and Darren Soto (D-Kissimmee), alongside Rep. Nydia Velázquez (D-New York), have filed a bipartisan bill to authorize the creation and presentation of a statue honoring baseball legend Roberto Clemente in the U.S. Capitol. The announcement was made on Clemente's birthday. Clemente, a Puerto Rican-born athlete, was a celebrated player for the Pittsburgh Pirates, winning the National League Most Valuable Player award in 1966 and leading his team to World Series titles in 1960 and 1971. He tragically died at age 38 in a 1972 plane crash while delivering relief goods to earthquake survivors in Nicaragua. The lawmakers emphasized Clemente's extraordinary talent, compassion, courage, and selflessness, highlighting his legacy beyond baseball, particularly his humanitarian efforts and impact on the Hispanic community. This initiative seeks to permanently honor his remarkable story and enduring legacy at the Nation's Capitol.
