Major U.S. Cities Brace for Increased Mosquito Activity This Summer
According to a report by pest control company Orkin, several major U.S. cities are expected to experience heightened mosquito activity this summer. Los Angeles, Chicago, and New York City top the list of 'hot spots,' followed by Detroit, Atlanta, Washington, D.C., Houston, Dallas, Cleveland, and Denver. The increase in mosquito populations is attributed to factors such as urban heat effects, stagnant water, and dense populations, which create ideal breeding conditions. Mosquitoes are not just a nuisance; they pose significant public health risks by transmitting diseases like Dengue fever, West Nile virus, and Zika. Experts warn that warmer temperatures and longer active seasons for mosquitoes are exacerbating these risks. States like Texas, New York, and Michigan are particularly vulnerable due to their climates and environmental conditions, but mosquito activity is a concern nationwide.
