Qantas and Melbourne Airport Reach Agreement for Major Expansion and New Runway
Qantas Group and Melbourne Airport have finalized a commercial agreement aimed at supporting future flight growth and significant infrastructure expansion. This agreement includes a 15-year commitment from Qantas to support the construction of a third runway at Melbourne Airport, expected to open in 2031. Additionally, the agreement underpins a $4.5 billion expansion of the international terminal, which will add five new widebody aircraft gates to accommodate future international growth. Qantas plans to base some of its new Airbus A350-1000LR aircraft in Melbourne, which will enable the opening of new international routes. The expansion will also include passenger upgrades such as a new Qantas International Business Lounge, faster check-in processes, and improved baggage facilities. Jetstar, a subsidiary of Qantas, is also expected to benefit from these developments, as Melbourne is its largest port.
