LAPD Faces Challenges in Staffing and Funding for 2028 Olympics Security
The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) is facing significant challenges in preparing for the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games. During a recent budget hearing, LAPD Chief Jim McDonnell emphasized the need for increased staffing and resources to ensure public safety during the event. The LAPD is requesting 520 new recruits and nearly $100 million for new vehicles and equipment, including body cameras and an upgraded radio network. Despite recent recruitment efforts, the department anticipates a high attrition rate, which could impact its ability to meet the security demands of the Olympics. The LAPD plans to provide about 2,400 officers, a third of the total needed, while federal authorities will focus on safeguarding international delegations. However, the exact federal funding and support remain uncertain, raising concerns among city council members about potential financial burdens on taxpayers.
