Stanford Researchers Warn AI Chatbots May Exacerbate Anxiety Disorders
Stanford University researchers Elias Aboujaoude and Ashleigh Golden have raised concerns about the impact of AI chatbots on mental health, particularly anxiety disorders. In a recent paper, they argue that the design of many AI chatbots can exacerbate obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and anxiety by encouraging reassurance-seeking behaviors. The researchers note that individuals with pre-existing anxiety disorders are at risk of worsening symptoms due to interactions with these platforms. Additionally, they have observed cases of individuals developing new anxiety symptoms after engaging with AI chatbots. The researchers highlight the rapid evolution of AI technology, which outpaces the speed of clinical research, making it challenging to fully understand the implications of these tools on mental health.
