Severe Cyclones Threaten Pacific Islands and New Zealand
Two category three cyclones, Vaianu and Maila, are currently impacting the Pacific region, with potential threats extending to New Zealand by the weekend. Vaianu is causing significant destruction west of Fiji, bringing storms and rain to Viti Levu, while Maila remains stationary between Papua New Guinea and the Solomon Islands. The Fiji Meteorological Service has reported flooding in Nadi due to Vaianu. Forecast models indicate Vaianu may move towards Queensland, Australia, before possibly impacting New Zealand. The cyclones are characterized by destructive winds averaging between 118 and 157 km/h. WeatherWatch forecaster Philip Duncan has noted the alignment of computer models predicting Vaianu's trajectory towards New Zealand, potentially affecting areas like Auckland or Tauranga.
