Singapore Plans mRNA Vaccine Development for Future Pandemics, Including 'Disease X'
Singapore has announced its intention to develop and manufacture mRNA vaccines, specifically designed to be adaptable and scalable in response to future unknown pandemics, referred to as 'Disease X.' Health Minister Ong Ye Kung highlighted mRNA technology's flexibility, speed to market, and production efficiency, noting that artificial intelligence (AI) could further accelerate solution iteration. This initiative follows the significant success of mRNA vaccines during the recent global pandemic, which demonstrated the technology's capability to design vaccines rapidly. Decades of research enabled mRNA firms to create vaccines in days, with clinical testing commencing as lockdowns began. The core principle involves injecting messenger RNA (mRNA) within lipid nanoparticles (LNPs) to instruct cells to produce specific proteins, like the coronavirus's spike protein, thereby training the immune system to recognize and combat pathogens. The success of mRNA vaccines has spurred renewed enthusiasm and funding for ...
