American Bar Association Moves to Eliminate Diversity Standard Amid Trump Administration Pressure
The American Bar Association (ABA), the sole accrediting body for law schools in the United States, is nearing the finalization of a decision to eliminate its diversity standard, known as Standard 206. This standard mandates that law schools demonstrate a commitment to diversity and inclusion by ensuring diverse faculty, staff, and student bodies in terms of gender, race, and ethnicity. The decision comes under pressure from the Trump administration, which has been actively working to dismantle diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives across higher education. The ABA's Council of the Section of Legal Education and Admissions to the Bar voted to strike the standard, but the change will not be finalized until the ABA's House of Delegates considers it, potentially as early as August. The rule is expected to be officially removed by 2027.
