Altru Health Systems Reports Increase in Births Amid Declining North Dakota Birth Rates
Altru Health Systems in Grand Forks, North Dakota, reported a 7.5% increase in births in 2025, with 1,511 newborns compared to 1,406 in 2024. This rise in births at Altru comes despite a decade-long decline in birth rates across North Dakota. Statewide, there were 9,760 births from July 2024 to July 2025, up from 9,634 in the previous year. Since 2016, North Dakota's birth rate has decreased from approximately 17 births per 1,000 people to nearly 11 per 1,000. The increase at Altru is notable against the backdrop of this broader trend, suggesting localized factors may be influencing birth rates in specific areas.
