Rising Shoplifting Incidents in England and Wales Highlight Retail Crime Concerns
Shoplifting incidents in England and Wales have increased by 5% from September 2024 to September 2025, totaling 519,381 offences, according to the Office for National Statistics (ONS) Crime report. Additionally, consumer and retail fraud saw a significant rise of 49% during the same period. The data, analyzed by the Liberal Democrats, shows a substantial increase in thefts reported to police, from 228,128 in 2020-21 to 530,457 in 2024-25. The British Retail Consortium (BRC) reported that over 14 million people in the UK witnessed violence or abuse against retail workers in the past year. Retailers like M&S have called for stronger police responses to combat the rising scale and severity of retail crime, emphasizing the routine nature of abuse, violence, and organized theft on high streets.
