Climate Change Drives Up Cost of Living Globally
Climate change is increasingly impacting the cost of living worldwide, as extreme weather events become more frequent and severe. According to a report by the Los Angeles Times, researchers have identified a phenomenon known as 'climateflation,' where climate change directly influences price increases. For instance, a heat wave in Europe during the summer of 2022 led to record temperatures of 115°F (46°C) in Spain, severely affecting olive production. This, along with other climate-related disruptions, contributed to a 0.7% rise in European food prices, nudging overall inflation up by 0.3%. The report highlights that as temperatures rise, air conditioning demands increase, infrastructure suffers, and insurance premiums soar, all contributing to higher living costs.
