Lobbyists Maintain Influence in Mayor Mamdani's New York City Administration
Despite initial concerns that Mayor Zohran Mamdani, a democratic socialist, would limit access for lobbyists, his administration has maintained an open-door policy, allowing lobbyists to continue scheduling meetings with city officials. This approach contrasts with the expectations of some ethics watchdogs who hoped for more stringent measures against the influence of lobbying at City Hall. Lobbyists report that they are able to meet with administration figures, many of whom are veterans from former Mayor Bill de Blasio's administration, and feel their concerns are being heard. The lobbying industry in New York City continues to thrive, with reported compensation reaching over $78 million in the first six months of the current year, a 4% increase year-over-year. This indicates that the business of influence has not diminished under Mamdani's leadership. While Mayor Mamdani himself rarely meets with lobbyists, preferring to engage with principals like CEOs, his staff remains accessible.
