DOJ Issues Final Rule for State and Local Government Website Accessibility Under ADA Title II
On April 24, 2024, the Department of Justice (DOJ) Civil Rights Division published a final rule to revise the regulation implementing Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). This rule establishes technical requirements for state and local governments to ensure their websites and mobile applications are accessible to individuals with disabilities. The final rule mandates compliance with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 Level AA for all web content and mobile applications provided or made available by public entities, with specific exceptions for archived content and pre-existing social media posts.
