US Wildland Firefighters Struggle with Costly Safety Gear Amid Pay Reforms
US wildland firefighters are facing challenges in affording essential safety gear, particularly high-quality boots, which can cost up to $800. Despite recent pay reforms, including a permanent pay raise and extended hazard pay, the cost of boots remains a significant burden for many firefighters. The boots, made by hand in the Pacific Northwest, are crucial for protection against the harsh conditions faced during firefighting. However, the financial responsibility for purchasing this gear largely falls on the firefighters themselves, as government stipends have not kept pace with the rising costs.
