Rip Current Safety Awareness Program Launched in Hempstead After Ocean Rescues
Officials in Hempstead, New York, have launched the Riptide Safety Awareness Program following recent ocean rescues involving dangerous rip currents. On Tuesday night, five swimmers were saved by off-duty lifeguards at Robert Moses State Park. To address the risks, the town plans to increase beach signage with safety tips and distribute brochures educating beachgoers on how to escape rip currents. Demonstrations were held to show how lifeguards respond to swimmers in distress, emphasizing the importance of remaining calm and swimming parallel to the shore to escape the current. Lifeguards are trained to identify rip currents by observing water color changes and wave patterns. The initiative aims to enhance public safety and awareness during the summer beach season.
