Lightning Strike Destroys Ford F-150 in Utah, Driver Escapes Unharmed
A lightning strike caused a Ford F-150 pickup truck to catch fire on Interstate 15 near Cedar City, Utah, leaving the vehicle completely destroyed. The driver, Casey Pettus, was traveling during a rainy afternoon when lightning struck his truck, disabling its electronics and forcing him to manually steer the vehicle to safety. Within minutes, the truck caught fire and was reduced to ashes despite firefighters' efforts. Pettus, a contractor, lost expensive tools stored in the cab but escaped without injuries. The incident highlights the rare but destructive potential of lightning strikes on vehicles, which can damage electrical systems, shatter windows, and even ignite fires. According to the National Weather Service, occupants of hard-topped metal vehicles are generally protected due to the Faraday cage effect, but the vehicle itself can sustain significant damage.
