Turkey to Implement Social Media Ban for Individuals Under 15
Turkey is set to enforce a ban on social media usage for individuals under the age of 15, effective November 1. This decision, published in Turkey's Official Gazette, follows the passage of a relevant law by parliament in April. Social media providers will be mandated to implement technical and administrative measures to safeguard young users, including age verification processes. The legislation also prohibits offering services that could lead to addiction among children. This move aligns Turkey with other nations, such as Australia, that have introduced legislative restrictions to protect minors from the potential harms of online platforms. The United Kingdom and France are reportedly working on similar measures. The initiative aims to address digital risks including screen addiction, sleep deprivation, cyberbullying, and eating disorders.
