Zimbabwean Chief Orders Halt to Dam Construction Near Sacred Shrine Amid Heritage Dispute
A traditional leader in Zimbabwe, Chief Chivero, has ordered the cessation of a dam construction project by GritMine Minerals near the Kaguvi Shrine, a site of significant historical and spiritual importance. The shrine is associated with the First Chimurenga heroes Sekuru Kaguvi and Chinengundu Mashayamombe. The decision follows protests from local villagers and war veterans who argue that the construction threatens the sanctity of the site, which is used for rainmaking ceremonies and is considered a spiritual home. The villagers have accused the company of illegally extracting gold-bearing sand, with over 100 truckloads reportedly removed. The dispute has prompted a government investigation into the project's approval process.
