Hurricane Genevieve Causes High Surf and Dangerous Rip Currents Along Southern California Coastline
Beachgoers in Southern California are being cautioned as Hurricane Genevieve generates large surf and hazardous rip currents along approximately 700 miles of coastline. Waves reaching up to 10 feet are creating perilous conditions for swimmers and surfers. Lifeguards in Los Angeles County are conducting numerous water rescues, with each lifeguard averaging two to three rescues per shift. The dangerous surf coincides with the U.S. Open of Surfing in Huntington Beach, affecting beaches in Los Angeles and Ventura counties as well. Officials advise those caught in rip currents to swim parallel to the shore before heading back to land. Some beachgoers are opting to stay out of the water due to the rough conditions.
