U.S. Department of Energy Funds XGS Energy for Waterless Geothermal Development in New Mexico
The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has selected XGS Energy to receive funding as part of a broader initiative to accelerate geothermal energy development across the United States. This funding, part of over $99 million allocated by the DOE, aims to advance next-generation geothermal technology. XGS Energy, in collaboration with Baker Hughes, New Mexico Tech, and Sandia National Laboratories, will focus on developing a system that generates geothermal power without consuming water. This approach is particularly crucial for New Mexico, a region rich in geothermal heat but scarce in water resources. The project involves drilling a deep vertical appraisal well to gather critical subsurface data, which will help reduce development uncertainty and inform future commercial geothermal projects in the state. The data collected will refine understanding of the subsurface, optimize well and project designs, and accelerate the deployment of reliable, around-the-clock geothermal power to New Mexico's grid.
