Hawaii's Native Birds Face Challenges Amid Recent Storms
Recent storms in Hawaii have posed significant challenges for conservation efforts aimed at protecting the state's endangered native birds. According to Hawaii Public Radio, the Keauhou Bird Conservation Center on Hawaii Island reported the death of a rare 'akeke'e bird following the second Kona low storm. The bird, native to Kaua'i, was critically endangered. The storms caused substantial damage to facilities, including $10,000 to $15,000 worth of damage to fences due to fallen trees. Despite these challenges, conservationists are relieved that only one bird was lost, as severe weather can lead to illness or injury among birds. The storms have also triggered mating behaviors among the birds, which is concerning as more storms are anticipated.
