Judge Criticizes DOJ's Request for Extended Sentence in Brooklyn Synagogue Crash Case
In Brooklyn, U.S. District Judge Eric Vitaliano criticized the Department of Justice's request for a 14-month sentence for Dan Sohail, who crashed his car into the Chabad Lubavitch World Headquarters. Sohail, who has been in custody for six months, was sentenced to time served plus seven days to arrange mental health care. The incident, which occurred in January, involved Sohail repeatedly driving his car into the synagogue's door, causing significant property damage but no injuries. The judge emphasized that the crime was not motivated by hate but was a result of Sohail's mental health issues. Prosecutors had sought a longer sentence as a deterrent against antisemitic crimes, but the judge noted that the charges were for property damage, not a hate crime.
