UAE Freelance Visa Reforms Boost Independent Work Opportunities
The UAE has introduced significant reforms to its freelance visa system, making it easier for individuals to engage in independent work. The Green Visa, a five-year renewable self-sponsored residency permit, is now a primary option for established freelancers. Eligibility for this visa requires a Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MoHRE) freelance permit, a bachelor's degree or specialized diploma, and a minimum annual freelance income of $98,000 over the past two years. The reforms have led to a 261% increase in freelance licenses in the first quarter of 2026, reflecting a growing trend towards freelancing in the UAE. These changes are part of a broader effort to diversify the UAE's economy beyond oil and attract global talent.
