San Francisco Weather Advisory: High Waves and Rip Currents During Bay to Breakers Event
The annual Bay to Breakers race in San Francisco took place under sunny but windy conditions on Sunday, May 17, 2026. According to the National Weather Service (NWS), the windy weather has caused high waves and an increased risk of rip currents along Ocean Beach, where the race traditionally concludes. Participants were advised to avoid entering the water due to these hazardous conditions. The event, which splits the city in half with road closures along the race route, saw thousands of runners and walkers, many in colorful costumes, navigating the streets from the waterfront to Ocean Beach. Public transit services, including BART and Caltrain, provided additional trains to accommodate the influx of participants and spectators.
