UK Government Considers Banning Children from Speaking to Strangers in Online Games
The UK government is contemplating a ban on children speaking to strangers in online games such as Fortnite and Roblox. This consideration follows a similar social media ban implemented in Australia. Kanishka Narayan, the UK's online safety minister, highlighted concerns about 'stranger pairing' between children and unknown adults on gaming platforms. The issue was discussed primarily in the context of gaming rather than traditional social media platforms like TikTok and Instagram. Rachel De Souza, the Children's Commissioner for England, echoed these concerns, noting that young boys are particularly vulnerable to exploitation on gaming platforms. Roblox, a platform with a significant child user base, has faced numerous lawsuits over child safety concerns and is introducing new age-based account categories to enhance safety.
