South African Mines Embrace Ventilation and Battery Tech for Deeper Mining
South African mines are increasingly adopting ventilation-on-demand (VoD) technologies and battery-electric vehicles (BEVs) as part of their modernization and mechanization efforts. According to Sue Breckenridge, marketing and communications officer at Mining Equipment Manufacturers of South Africa (Memsa), these technologies are expected to see rapid adoption in deep-level mines. VoD systems allow mine operators to optimize ventilation based on real-time needs, reducing energy costs and improving safety. BEVs are gaining traction due to their ability to lower diesel emissions and reduce ventilation requirements. The shift towards electrification is seen as a critical step for sustainable and cost-efficient mining operations.
