Seattle Times Columnist Resigns After Paper Allegedly Refused to Publish 'Save Women's Sports' Column
Matt Calkins, a sports columnist for The Seattle Times for 11 years, has resigned from the newspaper, citing the paper's alleged refusal to publish his column on the 'Save Women's Sports' movement. Calkins stated that the column aimed to present the perspectives of two Washington student-athletes who oppose the inclusion of transgender girls in female sports, arguing that supporting sex-separated athletic competition does not necessarily equate to hostility towards transgender individuals. According to Calkins, the newspaper declined to run the piece after a six-day review process, with editors citing that he had not informed them in advance. Calkins, however, believes this was an excuse and that his voice was being stifled, noting a pattern of his 'against the grain' columns being rejected. He expressed respect for his former editors but felt he could no longer perform his job effectively.
