DHS Expands Deepfake Testing with RIVR-2 Program, Emphasizing Industry Collaboration
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Science and Technology Directorate has launched RIVR-2, an expanded program for evaluating biometric deepfake detection technologies. This initiative builds on RIVR-1, which identified gaps in remote identity verification workflows. RIVR-2 introduces a new experimental series called RIVR-X, specifically for emerging technologies like biometric deepfake detection (BDD). The program aims to assess which deepfake generation methods are most challenging to detect and how well detector performance generalizes across different methods. Participating detector providers are encouraged to contribute 1,000 deepfake images that their technology successfully detects but might challenge others. DHS is also soliciting deepfake attack data from other organizations to create comprehensive datasets for comparison. The evaluation will involve various deepfake generation methods, with applications for IDV and SMTD due in October, and PAD and BDD applications expected in December, wit...
