Sediment Build-Up Threatens Global Reservoirs by 2060
A recent study has revealed that over half of the world's freshwater reservoirs could become 'functionally dead' by 2060 due to sediment accumulation. Researchers analyzed data from more than 550,000 reservoirs worldwide, finding that sediment build-up is reducing water storage capacity by over 7% each decade. This phenomenon occurs as dams trap silt, sand, and gravel, which gradually fill reservoirs and compromise their functionality. The study highlights that arid regions, including Australia and Spain, are particularly at risk, with up to 85% of reservoirs in these areas expected to lose their utility. The findings also emphasize the role of climate change in accelerating sedimentation rates through increased rainfall and erosion.
