Millennials Face Unpaid Caregiving Burden for Aging Boomer Parents Amid Shrinking Inheritance
Millennials in the United States are increasingly finding themselves in the role of unpaid caregivers for their aging baby boomer parents, despite online declarations of refusal. A viral Reddit thread highlighted millennials' frustrations, with many expressing a desire to place their parents in care homes. However, data from the Population Reference Bureau indicates that the number of family caregivers for older adults has grown by 32% from 2011 to 2022, with adult children being the largest group of caregivers. This trend is driven by financial necessity, as multigenerational living arrangements are on the rise, with over 66 million Americans living in such households. The caregiving burden is exacerbated by smaller family sizes, geographic dispersion, and a shortage of paid care workers.
