Consumer Financial Protection Bureau Research Reveals Increased Use of Buy Now, Pay Later for Essential Goods
Research conducted by the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) indicates a growing trend among Americans to utilize 'Buy Now, Pay Later' (BNPL) services for essential purchases. The CFPB's findings show that over 60 percent of individuals using BNPL services are managing multiple simultaneous loans. Furthermore, a separate poll conducted by Data For Progress, also cited by the CFPB, highlights that 46 percent of shoppers have employed BNPL options specifically for acquiring necessities such as groceries. This data suggests a significant shift in consumer spending habits, where deferred payment plans are increasingly being used not just for discretionary items, but for everyday household needs. The prevalence of multiple loans among BNPL users also points to potential financial complexities for consumers relying on these services.
