New York High School Introduces AI-Powered Robot Assistant Amid Concerns
The Salamanca City Central School District in New York has signed a contract with robotics startup Realbotix to introduce AI tools and a humanoid robot named Sally into select technology classes at Salamanca City Central High School. The initiative, costing $57,590, aims to enhance student participation through natural conversation and real-time interaction. Sally, a stationary humanoid robot, will be used alongside Realbotix's Optio AI model, which serves as an at-home tutor. Despite the educational potential, the move has sparked concerns among teachers and parents. The New York State United Teachers union and local community members have expressed apprehension about the implications of AI in education, emphasizing the need for authentic human interaction in learning environments.
