Brazil Seeks to Expand Poultry and Pork Exports to Jamaica Amid Sanitary Agreement Negotiations
Brazil is in discussions with Jamaica to establish a sanitary agreement that would allow the export of poultry and pork to the island nation. Currently, Brazil, a leading global producer and exporter of animal protein, is not authorized to export these products to Jamaica due to the absence of a bilateral sanitary certification agreement. Estevão Carvalho, executive manager of markets at the Brazilian Animal Protein Association (ABPA), noted that a CARICOM technical visit and risk assessment in Brazil have already approved the country for such exports. However, Brazil's proposal for a health certification agreement remains unanswered by Jamaica. ABPA President Ricardo Santin emphasized Jamaica's significance as a market due to its high chicken consumption, suggesting that Brazil aims to complement rather than compete with local production. Brazil's export system is supported by rigorous quality control, government supervision, and adherence to international food safety standards.
