Burkina Faso's Gold Production Surpasses $6 Billion Amid Mining Reforms
Burkina Faso has reported over $6 billion in gold production through official channels in the first half of 2026. This achievement is part of the military-led government's efforts to formalize artisanal mining and enhance state oversight of the gold industry, which is one of the largest in Africa. The Ministry of Energy, Mines, and Quarries, led by Minister Yacouba Zabré Gouba, disclosed these figures during a mid-year evaluation. The country produced 26 tonnes of fine gold from industrial mines and procured approximately 29 tonnes from artisanal and semi-mechanized miners. This dual approach aims to improve traceability, curb smuggling, and increase official reserves. The government has also established new artisanal mining cooperatives and delineated mining corridors to promote coexistence between industrial and small-scale mining activities.
