NYC Expands Pop-Up Cooling Stations Amid Heat Wave
New York City has implemented pop-up cooling stations to provide relief during extreme heat events, particularly in neighborhoods with high Heat Vulnerability Index scores. These stations, operated by seven community-based organizations (CBOs), offer tents, misting systems, shade, and drinking water. The initiative targets outdoor workers, immigrant communities, older adults, and residents without air conditioning. The program was activated on days when the National Weather Service issued heat advisories or when the heat index exceeded 82°F (27.8°C). This effort is part of a broader citywide push to address heat-related risks, including the activation of the Heat Emergency Plan during record-breaking heat indices of up to 109°F (42.8°C). Additional measures include extended pool hours and in-home wellness checks for vulnerable populations.
