Hurricane Genevieve Intensifies to Category 4, Impacts Expected in California
Hurricane Genevieve, which rapidly intensified over the weekend, reached Category 5 status in the eastern Pacific Ocean with sustained winds of 160 mph before weakening slightly to a Category 4 storm with 155 mph winds as of July 27, 2026, 12:00 p.m. ET. The National Hurricane Center (NHC) reports that Genevieve is the first Category 5 hurricane in the basin since 2024. The storm is expected to generate large swells and potentially cause coastal flooding along Southern California's coast later this week. Meanwhile, Hurricane Fausto, located 670 miles east of Hilo, Hawaii, is weakening and expected to downgrade to a tropical storm by the end of July 27. High surf advisories are in effect for east-facing Hawaiian beaches as Fausto approaches.
