The Parallel Lives of Two Translators: Moshe Leyb Pitshenik and Moshe Ha-Elion
The article explores the lives and works of two translators, Moshe Leyb Pitshenik and Moshe Ha-Elion, who translated Homer's 'Odyssey' into Yiddish and Ladino, respectively. Despite never meeting, their lives share remarkable parallels, both having lived through the Holocaust. Pitshenik, born in Galicia, translated the 'Odyssey' into Yiddish before being killed in the Holocaust. Ha-Elion, a Sephardic Jew from Thessaloniki, survived Auschwitz and later translated the 'Odyssey' into Ladino. Their translations reflect their personal experiences and the broader historical context of displacement and survival.
