Panama is notable for being the only Latin American country that does not recognize a Palestinian state, having recognized Israel in 1948. The visit is also a personal triumph for Panama's ambassador to Israel, Ezra Cohen, who has been instrumental in fostering these diplomatic ties. The Jewish community in Panama, which has historical roots dating back to the Spanish Inquisition, is expected to play a significant role in the visit. The two countries have a free trade agreement that was ratified in 2019, further solidifying their economic relationship.
